Your 2023 New Year’s Resolution—I Will be a Better Driver!
The most common New Year’s resolutions often involve health goals. Year after year, we desire to be better eaters, exercise more, prioritize sleep, or practice more self-care.
Making personal goals as a driver is just as essential as any other intention of bettering your health. With the start of a brand-new year, it’s time to remove bad habits and begin better ones. Get inspired to be the best driver you can be with the following New Year resolutions:
- I will eliminate all distractions while driving.
- I will thoroughly prepare for each drive, so I am never in a hurry.
- I will use my turn signals each time it is necessary.
- I will stick to the speed limit, no matter what.
- I will ensure I am ready to drive.
- I will take better care of my vehicle.
1 | I Will Eliminate All Distractions While Driving.
Even the most experienced drivers give in to distractions on the road. It’s all too easy with our modern world of texting, social media, and many other things begging for our attention. Begin 2023 by promising to stay focused while driving and eliminate all possible distractions.
If you’re already a pro at keeping your eyes off your phone while behind the wheel, you’re off to a great start! However, many other things can distract a diver, like:
- Checking or adjusting your GPS
- Reaching for something
- Eating and drinking
- Putting on makeup
- Brushing your hair
- Talking on the phone
- Rowdy backseat guests
- A passenger demanding your attention
2 | I Will Thoroughly Prepare for Each Drive, so I am Never in a Hurry.
A common reason for speeding or accidents is a rushed driver. Reduce your risk of feeling like you must beat the clock by checking the weather and traffic before you get on the road. Also, remember when school starts and ends in your area. School traffic can set you back anywhere from 5 to 20 minutes or more!
If you don’t want to be in a hurry to get somewhere, try leaving earlier. The things that obstruct traffic or make us late are often unpredictable. You’re better off leaving as early as possible. After all, the worst that could happen is you’ll need to sit in your car if you’re too early to attend your appointment, date, or another event.
3 | I Will Use My Turn Signals Each Time it is Necessary.
So many accidents are caused by people forgetting to use their turning signals. They are there for a reason—And a very good one! Remember to use your turning signals correctly. Flip the signal before making a turn, not as you do it. That way, the drivers around you have plenty of time to prepare for your next move.
4 | I Will Stick to the Speed Limit, No Matter What.
It’s not rare to see people zipping past the speed limit. And if you live in Tampa, Florida, you know this too well. It’s better to play it safe, so don’t give in to peer pressure! Always follow the posted speed limit.
Shaving a few minutes off your arrival time isn’t worth a ticket—or worse. Someone once told me, “If you can’t afford to speed, don’t do it.” This is a great perspective to have, making a lot of sense. However, even if you can afford a speeding ticket, you shouldn’t do it. Keep yourself and others on the road safe by abiding by the posted limits.
5 | I Will Ensure I am Ready to Drive.
We all know that no one should ever get behind the wheel after having an alcoholic beverage. However, several other situations can make driving just as risky as drinking and driving. For instance, driving when you are emotionally distraught, like when you are angry, anxious, or stressed, can be similarly disorienting.
Additionally, driving when you’re overly tired or hungry can affect your ability to stay safe. If you must drive with heightened emotions or fatigue, prepare by doing the following:
- Eat a healthy meal if you’re tired or hungry.
- Sip on calming chamomile tea if you’re angry or stressed.
- Have coffee or another caffeinated beverage if you are sleepy.
- Listen to uplifting and upbeat music to put yourself in a better mood or wake up.
- Listen to calming music if you’re stressed, angry, or anxious.
6 | I Will Take Better Care of my Vehicle.
If you don’t have this habit yet, 2023 is the year to get on it! Start the new year fresh by maintaining a cleaner car and repairing what needs to be fixed. Take it a step further by learning how to fix basic car problems on your own. If you succeed, it’ll be a resolution almost guaranteed to save you big bucks in 2023!
Are you wondering how to begin your journey of taking better care of your car? We’ve got you covered! Here are some tips for properly maintaining a neat and functioning vehicle:
- Schedule routine appointments with your local mechanic to ensure everything is in working condition.
- Fill the gas tank before it hits empty.
- Regularly check your tires’ air pressure and fill them when necessary.
- Clean out all the junk!
- Don’t leave random belongings in your car—it’s not an extra storage room.
- Wash the exterior of the vehicle at least once a month.
- Vacuum and wipe down your car’s interior at least once a month.
